What Are The Causes Of Acne?

Acne is widespread and common.  For most people, it is an unpleasant but inevitable part of their transition through adolescence and into adulthood. For the worst of reasons, suffering from acne is a memorable part of the experience of growing up for a lot of people. If you understand what causes acne, you have taken the first, vital step to learning how to minimize it’s effect.

What causes acne?

Understanding what causes acne starts with the structure of your skin, in this case on your face. The surface of your skin has millions of tiny openings called pores, a great many of which also have tiny hairs growing up through them. These pores are structured in such a way that they provide the escape route for oil produced by the sebaceous glands. This oil is known as sebum.

In normal, acne free skin, only enough sebum to help keep your skin healthy, by keeping it moisturized, is produced.  It is produced by the glands and works its way up through the pore onto the surface of the skin.Sebum is a multi-tasking oil, it helps in keeping your skin moist and also clean, by aiding in the removal of bacteria and dead skin cells. You can’t stop your skin getting dirty, but it is comforting to know that nature has provided a ready made solution.

The result of any interruption to this natural process is acne. This happens when the body has to learn to deal with an increase in hormone production, adolescence for example.Hormone fluctuations during this learning process can have a number of consequences, the onset of acne being a particularly noticeable one.

How acne actually forms

When your body produces extra hormones, it causes the sebaceous glands under the skin to produce much more sebum than before. The action of these hormones can also make it much more difficult for the skin’s pores to get rid of the dead skin cells.A clogged pore is the end result, an ideal environment for bacteria to flourish, leaving you with swelling, inflammation, infection, and skin tenderness.

After this a variety of different acne lesions start to form on your skin, whiteheads, blackheads and pimples being particularly common.Together all these lesions are affectionately known as acne, something only the lucky few will avoid.

Living and dealing with acne

While there is no way to 100% get rid of acne problems, there are a number of things you can do to make living with it and dealing with it easier.  These include:

• Cleanse your skin – Use a gentle facial cleanser twice per day to help get rid of excess oils, dead skin cells, and bacteria.Be careful not to irritate your skin by rubbing or scrubbing your skin. This can lead to more acne.
• Apply anti-acne medication – Not all medications require a prescription. There are excellent options available over the counter. These medications perform a variety of tasks on your skin, by helping to reduce the amount of sebum produced and limiting the quantity of bacteria on your skin, the process of removing dead skin cells will be improved.
• Moisturize your skin – Moist and healthy skin is better able to overcome acne, so don’t let your skin get too dry.A moisturizer that is both oil-free and light in texture is a sound choice.
